Is it Time for a Special Meeting of the BCC to Discuss Large Public Gatherings?

Is it time to have a special BCC meeting to discuss the newest CDC/FDOH guidance regarding gatherings of 10 or more persons?  What about the massive Spring Break parties on Pensacola Beach right now?  Is it time for a meeting?

Later this morning, I will ask our County Administrator and our County Attorney about whether or not it would be a good idea to schedule a special meeting of the BCC to discuss Coronavirus and particularly our response as a county to this.

Right now, spring break is in full force at the beach, with the area experiencing huge crowds and a 20 minute traffic backup to get over the bridges to Pensacola Beach.

Nobody wants to harm businesses, nobody wants to over-react, and nobody wants to spoil anyone else's spring break.

But we all have seen the new guidance out yesterday from the President, the White House, and the CDC:

The new guidance strongly urges people to NOT gather in groups larger than 10 persons.

So the question for the administrator is this:  Is it time for a special meeting, because other areas of the state and country are taking very strict measures upfront to prevent the spread of this virus.  They are taking these precautions at great expense in order to do their social duty to help "flatten the curve" and thereby lessen the severity of this pandemic in the long run.

Also--I'm asking who's call it would be, ultimately, to restrict the gatherings on the beach.  BCC or SRIA?  And if there is disagreement--who is final authority?

I believe it is time for a special meeting, at a minimum, for this discussion to occur publicly.

Folks want to see us leading proactively on this.

  1. That would be up to the Chairman. Has he done anything about the North End? Looks like Bender took the lead on the gatherings, which is appropriate.

Century Mayor was in ICU and is now on Dialysis and the town cancelled their meeting for the election security. Keep the water runing in sewer out and garbage pick up..We are locked and loaded and the drug sub culture will do their own thing.

Actually watching NE for updates about services in the North end. So far nothing.

Maybe he'll draw a line at the Mason Dixon line..

    See ya'll after the apocalypse..

We got Moonshine for hand sanitizer in D5.

    Just kidding..

    Teleconference..?

    Take Care and be safe..

  2. This is Sad for small businesses. I heard underhill’s secretary nervously talking to his boss about maybe having to close the elbow room. Corona-virus. I hate it, but it does now allow time to campaign, especially door to door. Well, that’s probably out. So more time to try and raise money from people, well that’s probably out, too. So more time to think about maybe possibly winning, or more realistically not coming in 4th place.

  3. A lot of the county meetings are cancelled except EMS specialist interviews are glaring on the docket. I suppose it's not a great time to say this but the blow up from Firefigher union and Underhill and Edler and ECW has really damaged the county last year.

The lack of taking the bull by the horns and passing it off to Maygarden and Administrator by the BOCC shows also. You tried.

I don't care what the suit shows on the court site.

Pino did not post Edler's address and she can talk online about public matters, even if it pisses people off. It looks like some one else is doing the dirty work on the court case because Indest is not that smart and hopefully Edler is busy. The person who provided the screen shots for the original SLAPP is probably helping..yes "you" are transparent and some do have the talent for mind reading..

Why hasn't Escambia heard from the Medical Director over the Jail and EMS?

So here is the question --has training continued or is it not happening. All see the procurement item that the administrator had to sole source just to get training.

Yeah the newbie "know it alls" caused a lot of experience go out the door in public safety aided by the dude running around trying to keep a jet ski school and elbow bar open..

When we come out on the other side..

You have to even wonder if they were behind ham fisted article on PNJ about doing away with petition campaigns..

    They are so obvious..

    except to boot lickers...

On a serious note..are the crematories up to par.. in the funeral business?

Hope nobody video's the EMS picking up dead people and have a conniption fit.. you know, like the somebody with a video the person Underhill used to pretend he is saving public safety..

  6. Anonymous 6:44--I wouldn't wish a business closure on anyone. My understanding of that establishment is that in addition to a 2COP Beer/Wine only License for Consumption on Premises-- it also sells food items--so hopefully they can sell food to go and re-arrange the interior to only have 50% capacity for customers? hopefully. But I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I remember when I owned a restaurant and it is already a very tough business with thin margins.....This COVID 19 will do a lot of them in which is unfortunate. About the door to door campaigning--that is out for now (at least for the near term so far as I am concerned) I have suspended door to door campaigning due to the Chinese Coronavirus. The last thing anyone wants to see is someone knocking on their door--even if they know who the person is but especially if they don't know the candidate. To be out doing that now is poor form until this virus gets locked down, that is my opinion. Luckily, though, since 2010 I have made roughly 17,000 + door to door visits personally throughout D1. Folks know who I am and for that I am fortunate. If I was a guy trying to break through this year---wow, this would be a tough year to do that, particularly if such a person has/had ZERO name recognition and is not known in D1. Someone like that, with very little campaign cash, is going to have a tough time of it over the next 4 months 3 weeks and six days. I predict the Bronze medal for him, not 4th place though.
