Everyone's mind is on storm recovery and dysfunction within the property insurance market(s) in the state of Florida post-Hurricane Ian. That issue will be discussed heavily in the upcoming special session of the state legislature in early December.
So we will probably discuss Insurance matters on Monday.
I also want to talk about getting more power from the state to curb the ongoing, incessant littering we find ourselves dealing with in our County. We clean it up, citizens dump more out of their car windows, over and over the cycle repeats. I get a lot of calls on this so I am assuming my peers do as well. So we will discuss the idea of working with the state to allow us to up the penalty for littering locally at our discretion. Currently, this is a highly controlled area of governance where the state has usurped our ability to independently enforce and or set our own penalty amounts. An interesting discussion of this issue occurred in February of 2021 and can be heard at minutes 9:45 and 12:45 of this video.
I'm certain we will also be discussing the area of getting state reimbursement for state prisoners we house in our Jail--as this is something that costs local taxpayers lots of money and for which we have not been reimbursed.
Other topics of interest will certainly be discussed, and this should be a productive meeting this Monday at 1:00.
Enjoyed watching the ceremony yesterday. It was touching. Felt like a weight was lifted and the energy in the room was very positive and cordial.
ReplyDeleteI think I like the new board member. When he got emotional thanking his sister and noting his parents couldn't travel, it made me tear up a bit also.
It was thoughtful to save the business for another meeting.
I think to spend the federal money on getting broad band to the underserved areas of the county is a good move.
Thanks for the info.
Happy Thanksgiving.
I wonder if new D2 and his aide know the former commissioner is issueing public statements claiming what they said to him about this meeting.
ReplyDeleteI think many of these people in this underserved area could not/can not work from home nor attend virtual school nor partake in virtual banking and other current practices. I think these dollars are CARES funds. Wheels of government work slow. This is infrastructure and it is a fuction of governemnt. The COVID pandemic highlighted the need and the federal dollars are to be spent on such as this.
ReplyDeleteBroadband.
Barry is representing his constituents.
Kohler and Stroberger might want to rethink confiding in Underhill if they actually did because he will repeat it in writing. He has no filter nor self reflection upon his actions toward his fellow man. Could even be labeled a conduit in violation of the sunshine law.
*function. Haha.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the trash trucks, after pick up are contributing to litter on the roadways. We make sure ours is all sealed in a bag. If people put it loosely in a can, then a robotic arm dumps it in the truck and the driver drives off, trash can fly out.
ReplyDeleteHave ECUA make it a policy for customers to seal trash in a bag. Or they can charge more for a crew to clean up the trash and debris they scatter on the roadside.
Even ECUA distributing some type of plastic bags that will break down and compost easily but require customers to use them may help prevent household garbage being distributed by the one who are supposed to be picking it up.
Maybe talk to Vickie C. about that. Prevent rather than react.
I wonder if the county could have a staff member who could coordinate with the court for people who get a community service sentence and utilize them for trash pickup. Even put teen court perps to work.
