Whacked-Out, Ridiculous Campaign Finance "Consternation".....

Whacked-out "logic"from the online hate squad (s):  "If our preferred candidate and the candidate we despise each take campaign money from the same donor(s)--only the candidate we HATE is corrupt for taking the contributions----------our guy is great and honorable!

The issue of local candidate finance always seems to come up about this time of year during election periods as candidates head into the home stretch of campaign season.

Last Sunday in the PNJ, a big part of their hit on the three commissioners running for re-election was the fact that we all accept campaign checks from the same benevolent community and business leaders locally.

Online, certain facebook chat/opinion/entertainment groups like Escambia Citizens Watch (AKA the hate-club, echo chamber) love to take shots at "certain" candidates (I'm a frequent target) for the "who" it is that writes their campaign checks.

The all-too-frequent trope is that candidates who amass a big war chest (like the one I have cultivated in this election cycle) are corrupt, on the take, bought and paid for, good old boys,  etc. etc.  It is all just a big hate-festival of ad hominem attacks reverberating through the online padded-cell of insanity. It is comical---yet also hypocritical.

Here's why:

1.) The PNJ and these opinion/entertainment chat sites never chastise "their" guy or gal candidate for who it is that writes campaign checks to their particular campaigns.  No, no, no--their whacked out "logic" goes a little something like this:  "Our guys and the money they raise from our 'approved' donors are just fine---it is ONLY our enemies and the contributors to the candidates we don't like that are corrupt!"   Problem is, many (if not most) local candidates get money from the same pool of benevolent donors who actually are engaged in the political process and write checks.  Business owners, engineers, architects, builders, lawyers, developers and some others---these folks typically write checks for multiple candidates---and this allows those of us who are not independently wealthy the opportunity to run.  Would the PNJ and online hate sites want ONLY rich people running for office, rich and primarily white people?

Same thing with PACs:  "Business leaders we like create and fund PACs---Hooraay--great men!!!"
"Business leaders  we dislike create and fund PACs----Booooo..Corruption!!"

Often the "darling" candidates of the online  hate club society and the PNJ have actually taken PAC money or straight-up campaign checks from the same guys that give money to the candidates these social sites and the PNJ HATE!!........but somehow this is alright because it is "their" guy--so no matter who gives to THEIR guy--it is OK!

2.)They next complain about a candidate taking money from interests "outside" of their home district they represent.    Listen, that argument is just stupid and ridiculous.  Here's why:  although

we are voted in by district meaning only constituents who live in our district can vote for us--we are still responsible for county-wide decisions and our votes have huge impacts on ALL DISTRICTS--sometimes even outside our county and regionally !  So a business owner or a developer that is shrewd recognizes this and they fund candidates inside and out of their own district--because this is SMART.

Spock from Star Trek would most certainly call these two arguments above (and other similarly ridiculous and mentally-defective  illogical thought processes about campaign finance "corruption")
 "fascinating."

Here's the key:

Most of the time a local candidate starts out and runs---he/she does not tap into these local business leaders' funds right off the bat.  Sometimes it takes years.  For some candidates--it never happens for various reasons......Candidates self-finance initially with the help of friends and family to a large extent.  They go out, work hard, go door to door, and if they are fortunate and win---eventually such a person's work ethic and conduct in office might draw notice and future support from the check-writers. Sometimes the check writers won't finance a candidate for differing reasons--- in which case such individuals must continue largely self-funding subsequent runs for office.  No conspiracy at work, it's really quite a basic, fundamental observation that some fail to see.....

But make no mistake:  These community leaders that finance local campaigns don't just send in the checks to everyone that runs, willy-nilly.  Candidates (even established ones with winning track records) have to hustle, organize events, develop teams, hold fundraisers and work hard.  Building up a war chest--even for a candidate that is well-established--is no easy task!

I'm proud that among all of the single-district specific candidates in this year's race I have raised the most money, and that I have the third highest fundraising total overall among all local candidates.

But it didn't just fall out of the sky for me, and I owe NOBODY ANYTHING for it--other than being the best public official I can be, accessible, transparent, approachable, fair to all, and a guy who listens, studies issues, brings creative solutions and acts decisively.

AND everyone needs to know this:  I do not give any special dispensation to anyone merely because they support my campaign.  I treat all citizens with respect and I listen to all sides and I assist all constituents---including the ones who dislike me and support my opponents' campaigns.

It's called doing a job, being a statesman, and rising above the vitriolic, hate-spewing echo-chambers of whacked out conspiracy theories that are ridiculous.

And that's what I do  😀

  1. Maybe if you wouldn't wait for the shade meetings to have a real discussion between yourselves, and censure the buffoon leading the hate group you wouldn't be so frustrated with the spin YOU all allow to happen.

Remember, pointing the finger, you have three more pointing back at you.

We can't be flies on the wall and some are unable, unwilling, nor don't have enough time to figure it out for themselves.

PNJ, that's another question there, what is wrong with them?

Truly though, some can discern the downtown crowd and big money difference but some can not and are easily prey to that perception. They don't understand the different pots of money to be used in the budget and compare apples to oranges. I think a successful business family must have some brains about them.

Keep informing us here and if the lawsuits really, with prejudice, STOP !! against free speech from your employees we may help spread the message. Don't fund that toxicity, like a gun to the head of Escambia county. I believe it came via the hate group also. They used the MD.

I don't think anyone wants the Underhill/Owens voting block, although the ability to stick to comprehensive plans and go for smart growth do resonate with voters.

You will have an uphill battle because many just can't see beyond their dashboards stuck in traffic and blame you. Maybe they should get on the ECAT, like the 2012 traffic congestion plan was adopted and point the finger back in their direction..

  2. People are coming to the facebook page Escambia Public Forum for reporting.
    And so it begins...

  3. The worse thing I have seen that facebook page and owner do is to urge the medical director to sue their most outspoken opponent. They were first on the fundraiser for the plaintiff and posting support on the commissioner's page. Talk about nasty dirty politics. There it is. They also said your blog and comments are cyber bullying. Do they even know the law? They may seem to gain traction and yes the PNJ is biased.

Report how much that cost the pawns in their game, but once sued or arrested or code run..people have to react. With much power comes great responsibility.

They mute and delete people who speak too much away from their chosen agenda and candidates. Groupthink and having one commissioner should be obvious to anyone who understands the ingroup/ outgroup bullying philosophy but it happens in other groups as well.

The owner has blocked people so they can't read. It's outlandish.

    Toot your own horn.

They can't stand the anonymous comments because they can't go Ad hominun. They will probably twist themselves in knots coming for those this cycle-- Like anyone really cares.

They should look in the mirror. Are some people unaware and unable to see their own contributions to the insanity and drama? Silencing and censoring is uncivil. Truth will find a way.

  5. Deceit about the TDT on there also today. Look at the hotel owner doner recipient Underhill and DMO employee spin agenda. I was surprised even Commissioner May yesterday had not read the state statute for himself about the uses.

    Voters are so gullible.

Even if the meeting video posted, I wonder if they will watch it for themselves or look up the FL statute or just trust some one's comment.

    Amazing to watch the sheep.

  6. It's going to get even more nauseating to watch that f/b propaganda group this year.

Underhill will do anything he can to attempt to make anyone and everyone look bad and attempt to make Owens look good so he can get his exbusiness partner (failed)/aide in place.
Owens except connection with Underhill automatically makes him guilty by association. Obviously Owens will be playing the silent partner and his endorsement of the PNJ piece and saying "make politics boring again" tells the tale. Good Cop/ Bad Cop

Underhill crap about "tax in the night" B/S and his spin on the TDT is just the beginning.

Trouble and it starts with a T-- Get ready for the music man flim flam..

  7. As we celebrate Martin Luther King's life, let's think about the power of our words. It's not even worth trying to refute the many brave comments of "Anonymous". We all know who that is anyway. I'll just post a link to a viewpoint on words published in Forbes.

  8. I honestly can not understand Underhill saying the Bear and Cronley benefit from the gas tax that McMillan on the advisory committee helped get passed. The 4 cent gas tax and a vibrant public transportation make perfect sense to me. I don't even use the ECAT. In the long run it cuts down on infrastructure needs and is offset by federal grants. The 2012 traffic management plan call for that and also for economic developement opportunities for the citizens of Escambia.

I think he just wants to shut it down so he has more money for his neighborhood or something at the ruin of anyone else that uses it and so no bus runs down his street.

Can't have a conversation though because he shuts down comments, has people kicked off, or insults and degrades them publicly.

I can't stand Underhill or by default his aide.

So how does 4 cent gas tax help David Bear? I don't get Underhand's unlogic. Can you help me understand?

I wish Mc Millan had won that seat. We would all be so much better off in the county.

  9. one more, of course the board will not vote to treat rogue one Doug Underhill with special considerations with legal fees JAR!!
Did you miss the multiple onslaught of comments on YOUR site YOU host for him to call the rest of the board Corrupt and yes B@STURDS and so forth publicly? Newsflash. You look ridiculous defending the A$$HOLE.

Even though you have people blocked we still see you Nellie.

Wake up and smell the coffee, look in the mirror as your buddy Studer says do.

  10. J’Aimee Black heart doesn’t care about pacs, only ones associated with those she hates, like you, May and Barry. Remember, she’s a know it all. She is making fun of some Godzilla creature toy at your office. I can tell you, she has often said on her Facebook she would never give you credit for anything you did or do. You should call her Blix, because like him, her heart is black as midnight, black as pitch, blacker than the foulest witch. No charity for you from this one. Not even while she’s at church tomorrow.

  11. Commissioner, Under "Leave your comment", you say abusive, profane posts will not be allowed and that you approve all the posts. So if the comments of "Anonymous" are not abusive and profane, I would hate to see what you think rises to that level. Endorsing such rants is unconscionable.

  15. Theresa Blackwell: It has to be a really, really profanity-laden, expletive-filled post for me not to allow it to go live. F-word, C-word, Mother F-er---you know, mindless trash like that. And I also don't let the obvious spam from India, Pakistan, and Russia go live either. But it all is saved in the spam folder--I don't delete comments either (unlike the Hate site and one of my counterparts on the board--guess who that is?). The internet is a rough and tumble mosh-pit of vicious, biased attacks--and as you know I absorb lots of attacks. Tons of them. Regardless-- I don't block comments, nor do I block people from participating in this forum anonymously. I don't want to violate peoples' civil rights and get sued like Doug...plus, allowing all voices to be heard is what we should all do---which apparently is the exact opposite of what Doug does and also what happens in some social/entertainment/chat sites like Escambia Hate Club--where they actively stifle dissent by booting people off with whom they (she) disagree (s) and where they delete comments and entire threads from time to time. And you of all people, Theresa, should recognize the value/importance/necessity of anonymous speech; without it, many informed insiders would never come out of the shadows to say what they know about inappropriate behavior, policy not being followed, crimes being committed, misfeasance/malfeasance in office, etc. etc. etc. -- and much more. Without the protection of being an anonymous poster--these folks could not/would not risk the retaliation/retribution they would otherwise face. Sure, this creates an environment that is vitriolic, not for the faint of heart. Yes, it is mean spirited at times. But let me tell you this: The occasional nugget I have learned about via a well-placed, well-timed, credible yet anonymous post to this blog over the last 12 years is worth every attack I have endured and all the garbage posts I have had to work through in the process. I would think liberals and those who identify as Democrats would support anonymous speech, as the ACLU considers anonymous speech to be free speech that they strongly support (one of the few things I agree with the ACLU on, by the way). The problem with liberal logic is speech they like "should be protected" but speech they don't like (apparently anonymous posts included) "Must be ended!." You can't have it both ways though. I side with free speech and the constitution of this great nation always.

  16. Blackwell wants to know what is abusive or profane? It’s hers and J’Aimee Blix’s Facebook ECW. Now, that’s abusive. See, her court case is good. The several (note the word several) against Johnny Underhill are bad. And you, May and Barry are horrible because you had contributions from someone, the same someone who has contributed to DU, but he gets a pass for whatever he does, like call children names. yeah, whatever. Because J’Aimee Blix Blackheart picks sides and is prejudiced, she will get criticized. Now, if she’d only run for office and show us all how to make everyone happy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The problem J’Aimee has is common with people, hypocrisy. When she’s called out, she doesn’t like it. When someone calms her Blix and mentions her church, she’s embarrassed because she knows when she goes, everybody there knows she’s a hypocrite. Bowing her head to pray, they think about the tens of thousands of Facebook posts she makes on her hateful and hate filled little blog. Her snarky posts and comments. Her Protecting and defending evil doers. Her cute emojis for likes she makes about those she hates. Unfortunately, the comparison of her to Blix is accurate except for one thing. Blix embraces his black heart, J’Aimee indulges hers and denies it, even to herself. Everybody knows. Especially people at church.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Okay--I HATE to admit this but I am out of the loop on "Blix." I thought perhaps you were talking Hans Blix from the IAEA and the gulf war. What did he ever do wrong?? So then I googled "Blix" character and remembered him from "Legend" with Tom Cruise. It's funny--I remembered the character but not his name. Blix, that was one evil creature. But yes------unlike some others in our midst, he embraced the reality of what he was, he wasn't a fake, a poser--at least he kept it "real". Respect for that. Respect.

  19. It's easier to comment anonymously if one doesn't have an account set up. It does gets confusing. The debates among the fire fighters was hard to follow but interesting.

As far as mastering speech to be an effective leader. True. But if it is used for deceit, even though flowery and convincing to the gullible, it is wrong.

    Remember Hitler

  21. Dear Ms. Blackwell,

I just thought to check in with the comments on this string, and see your above comment "we all know who anonymous is." I certainly hope you aren't referring to me. I do not post anonymously, period, end of story. Nor do I post from my alternate Facebook account I am forced to maintain, for the reasons Commissioner Bergosh cites above.

Perhaps you didn't have me in mind, but that idea has been bandied about a lot on ECW. You often bring up your journalism background. I assure you, my academic background did not train me to employ anonymity. Look up the pieces that I had published in very well-regarded, peer-reviewed journals, most of which were on controversial matters that many academics wouldn't have touched with a ten-foot pole. So while I have no issue with Commissioner Bergosh allowing anonymous posts, I have no reason to avail myself of that function, either. Many, however, do. Especially in a climate of a County running amok on its due process for employees.

    Sincerely,

    Melissa Pino

  22. Apparently there are several anonymous commenters on this blog.
After being caught up in that Escambia Citizen Watch page, thinking it was a group of citizens and later realizing it was am arm of the Underhill dynasty I stopped commenting and just watch them. They do have a large number of members and have been adding them at a large rate lately. The Pensacola News Journal giving them a boost by the article the other day and claiming it's a citizen group must beguile many at first, hopefully they will see it for what it is also.
They are disparaging your attendance in the MLK parade yesterday. The owner and one commissioner are clearly not supporters of yours. That is easy to discern.
