I am one member of a five person board. The opinions I express on this forum are mine only, and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Escambia County Staff, Administrators, Employees, or anyone else associated with Escambia County Florida. I am interested in establishing this blog as a means of additional transparency to the public, outreach to the community, and information dissemination to all who choose to look. Feedback is welcome, but because public participation is equally encouraged, appropriate language and decorum is mandatory. Although this is not my campaign site for re-election--sometimes campaign related information will be discussed, therefore in an abundance of caution I add the following :

Escambia County Going with the Committee Approach to Naming the Repacement Bridge---Wisely

The Escambia BCC voted 3-2 today to move the naming of the replacement 3-Mile Bridge to a citizen's committee... a good decision for all!

Today the Escambia BCC voted by a 3-2 margin to go with a committee approach to the idea of renaming the 3-Mile Bridge over Pensacola Bay that currently carries the official designation of the "Philip D. Beall Sr. Memorial Bridge."

A local citizen's group had come in with a request that we adopt their plan to rename the structure for a local war hero-- with no additional consideration-- and to the detriment of the Beall family--as to do this would strip the Beall name from the bridge.

Nobody is saying, outright, NO WAY!

Folks are just asking that we consider alternatives.

Can we compromise and do a dual designation that honors both families?  How about we find a way to honor General Chappie James without stripping an honor away from the Beall family?

How about we name the airport at Pensacola for Chappie and keep the bridge named for Beall?

Taking a step back and listenting to stakeholders for a decision of this magnitude is smart, and I commend the board for not kowtowing to the loudest voices in the room and holding fast today with a vote to impanel a committee of concerned citizens to help us with this decision.

This was the wise, measured, and rational way to proceed on this issue!

You are right no matter what anyone says to have pushed this to a committee.

I see Underhills comments on facebook, Dosev has similar comments on his page. This entire thing is a mess on so many levels. Enlisting Marlette in the ranks, that makes it even worse? Dosev states he thinks there is a coordinated action to thwart his brilliant plan.

He will probably think since he was a pick for the committee he will be the ram rod. He calls out the entire panhandle government.

Part of me thinks personally I should just walk away from any of the discussions going forward. They are unable to be aware of the far reaching consequences of their actions.

I have seen sensitive people attempt to politely state the obvious but closed minded people can't see it. Things like this can start a civil war.

It has led to the discussion of race, do we really want to go there? Segregation was the Law. The South was defeated and there was social upheaval for everyone. It was a part of the evolution of culture. Yes the whites all over the country defeated the native people, in the beginning era of USA history it happens time and time again in history.

Yes laws were challenged and changed post civil war. Southern culture and economy evolved. Currently the Democrats are trying to rewrite history and paint themselves as the only victims and make white people pay, socially economically and politically.

These Vision Groupers are Pensacola stir it up poopers.

All I see for the next two years is fights unless some one on the committee has special wisdom. This will be a rough time for Pensacola.

All due to a JAR head running in leading the charge with no finesse or emotional depth.

They don't realize many lived segregation and it was the law. Black or White. There were consequences if the races attempted to mix and fines for both. Reconstruction era politics had failed and it was common knowledge that the only way going forward was to separate the cultures vis a vis races.

It is part of history and history repeats itself, there is now de facto segregation but there is still institutionalized governmental racism and it is with the democratic party presently. You watch the news.
