PNJ Editorial Board: Truth is their Enemy, Lies are their Stock-in-Trade, Propaganda is What They Are...

This piece of trash op-ed that will appear in tomorrow's edition of the PNJ is probably one of their worst yet.  Of all time. Tomorrow's garbage editorial is nothing but a haphazard, fact-barren ad hominem personal attack on four of the five elected Escambia County Commissioners.  And disgustingly, the most important, factual information is ignored in favor of a salacious attack on four of us.  The piece, most disturbingly, is built entirely on lies, rumors, insinuations and assumptions.

But it's foundations are lies.

PNJ Lie # 1.)  Janice Gilley was fired over the discussions of the 401(a) plan.  Not true, not even close.  (Hint for PNJ propaganda squad:  What did the ECAT union vote the week before the firing request?  Think.  You even covered it!  Nope, no mention of that... What about the almost $200,000.00 settlement that happened the same week--the second one based on harrassment in public safety?  nope, no mention of that even though your paper covered it.  What about the fact that the only other area printed newspaper publisher has openly called for Janice's termination for months now?)

PNJ Lie #2.)   An insinuation that the board and members of the board violated the Florida Sunshine law and "orchestrated" the firing for months.  This is a straight-up, bald faced lie and a fabrication.  If they think we did it,  have the guts to take your proof to the SAO and push for us to be prosecuted!  You are liars, PNJ editorial team,  straight up.  And this insinuation is a lie.  Shame on you both, Andy Marlette and Lisa Nellesen Savage.  You have no integrity.

PNJ Lie #3.)   That I purposely gave a "milquetoast" explanation of my rationale for firing Janice.  NOT TRUE!  roll back the tape and re-watch.  I said I didn't want to publicly discuss it.  "I like to praise in public, punish in private!"  That's what I said.  And when you try to sell the fiction that the other board members "couldn't muster specific reasons or a public explanation for their vote." That, too,  is a straight up lie and you know it.  Each of us with the exception of Doug intimated that we did not and would not make a public spectacle of a tough circumstance and would not "air dirty laundry"---out of consideration for Janice.  For you to accuse us of purposely being deceptive is a LIE.  Watch the actual meetings and what we said--instead of peddling lies and mischaracterizations.

To the PNJ "Editorial Board" that wrote this garbage:  The bottom line is this board has the authority to do what we did.  She works for us under a contract, we hired her.  Sometimes entities and leaders part ways--you know that.  CEO's and companies, Baseball teams and star pitchers, AND yes--counties and their administrators.  It's not personal for any of us so far as I can tell; certainly isn't for me.  It's business.  But it is disgustingly bizarre for you to use Janice Gilley as your straw man man here to attack us with lies and mischaracterizations.  You don't care about the truth, and you sure as hell don't care about Janice Gilley--obviously.  You are simply using her and this uncomfortable situation to aid in yet another attack on those of us who lead, regardless of what this is doing to her and her family.  I harbor no ill-will toward Janice, I think she is and was a great person.  Don't use her termination as fodder to attack, that's reprehensible.  Here is a novel concept PNJ:  Go back and do some basic reading on honor, truth, and journalistic integrity.  You have HUGE deficits in each of these areas and we all see it.

The same applies to ECW. Speculation, assumptions, and lies run rampant. Salacious headlines get attention and facts are ignored. Escambia County has the dumbest people per capita in Florida. Simpletons follow along because they don’t know anything else.

"we all see it"

No, unfortunately most don't.

This looks like ECW team propaganda that writes on the editorial board, I don't think it's those two mentioned.

This quote below is from a Florida relocation guide. NW Florida isn’t exactly known for intelligent life form here. And it’s definitely not known for independent thinkers. If granny Betty believes in something, the whole family does too. Even if granny Betty says the sky is purple, the rest of her kin will fight you to death if you dare believe it’s really blue. That’s why PNJ can say whatever they want, and the town falls for it hook line and sinker. Welcome to Pensacola.

“Florida in general has “nice” people. But generally speaking, the people in the panhandle are not noted for their intellect and are decidedly ignorant, right-wing, followers. I drive past as quickly as possible, and advise you to do the same.”

Hilarious people post Marlette cartoons, like they think he understands politics and especially local government.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. A good example are the comments on Escambia County Citizens Watch group under the post about the county check registry. The stupid comments will make your head hurt. People don’t understand what it takes to run a county, so when they saw charges for things like gasoline they automatically thought Commisioners were filling up their own cars. They were sharpening their pitch forks to go demand they give back that gas money. Yes, Escambia county is low on intelligence, making them easy to manipulate.

This is also why the poverty level in Escambia county is so high. Ignorance breeds poverty.

I had really hoped not to have to speak to Ms. Gilley's tenure at the County any more. But with the BOCC having done the right thing on not publicly addressing all of the inadequacies and problems per her tenure, Lisa Nellessen Savage and Andy Marlette are going to continue to churn out garbage for their Downtown backers.

I'd like to know where this editorial board was when Ms. Gilley was firing veteran bus drivers for coming down with covid or attending their daughters' funerals. This would be laughable, if they weren't so heinous in their blatant politicking and political lies. My comment on the PNJ website:
------------------------
It would have been really nice for local media sources to handle Ms. Gilley's termination with the class that she did, but I'm not sure why anyone who lives in the unincorporated areas would continue to be surprised by Downtown power brokers continuing to try to blow the County up to solidify power in the City. It couldn't be any more ham fisted. Which is it, PNJ--did the commissioner terminate as a knee jerk reaction to the retirement benefits, or was it something that they had been trying to get their courage up for months to do? That's the trouble with dishonest dealings. The cognitive dissonance has you folks so ripped up you can't even keep a through line in a single article. As someone who advocated--publicly, and over the course of a year and a half--that the Board take firmer control over the chaos at the County under Ms. Gilley's watch, I naively thought that if she did get terminated, we could all move on--those of us who care about the County--and start rebuilding what came unglued during her tenure. I would prefer not to have to post on this any longer, but the malignant opportunism the PNJ is running with requires an answer.

Here are just some of the issues I spoke on publicly with documented evidence per Ms. Gilley's operations: "friends and family" procurements (some of them perhaps technically illegal, particularly during the debris removal); contributing to the cover-up of systemic sexual harassment in Public Safety, including male supervisors coercing female subordinates into sexual relations; systematically firing senior staff who were about to reach retirement on the slimmest of excuses; refusing to properly fulfill public record; unequal application of code violations; her professed ignorance of any knowledge of problems brought before the board; her appalling hoaxer handling of covid at the County; unequal treatment of staff who were infected with it; hiring expensive consultants without the Board's prior knowledge; allowing an IT director to introduce onion routers into the County's IT; cherry picking evidence to turn over to FDLE on EMS; refusing to act on documentation I turned over on illegal practices in Fire administration; lying repeatedly about the cause of negotiation difficulties; running fake investigations out of the Ethics and Compliance Office to harass County workers; knowingly and willfully violating a paramedics due process so badly the insurance company forced a settlement, installing a bloated, many-layered bureaucracy so she would always have plausible deniability for her decisions. Any one of these things would have been sufficient. --Melissa Pino

What's with the "everybody knows stuff"? Thanks for that info. Yes that makes sense, the new fake account is Wendy. She was trying to whip people up on sunshine law garbage after Doug immediately posted and sent Pam's letter to Jim at the PNJ.

Anonymous said...

I think the real undercurrects are the Underhills used facebook and thought it a winning strategy to get the mob after other commissioners all day every day, then summoned up people to call and write and go to meetings as a tactic to win votes from the other four commissioners.

He used his knowledge of warfare information propaganda, thinking it would be a winning strategy in public service and being a member of a board.

Finally a few in the community had had enough of his attempts at public humiliation and sued him for those action he continued on ECW facebook, so now he is doing the same thing yet expecting a different outcome.

Wendy wants you to pay for her husband's legal fees so she is disparaging you on facebook again and trying to get people on her side and email, when the decision is between the four elected officials which he has always caused trouble for unnecessarily.

How is that going to work?

What is one definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I know technically this is a PNJ editorial and a Marlette cartoon but that, my friends is what is behind the curtain.

In my opinion.

Yeah really funny.

See this comment from ECW on the Janice story from the other day. I guess they think it's OK to have long term paramedics arrested and awaiting a trial that could have a 30 year sentence because they may or may not have missed one of the classes to be able to instruct CPR with a gag order issued to boot and the trial held over for more than a year.

Melissa Pino worked hard to expose these kinds of things at great personal cost and emotional toll.

Some of these must feel smart because they think they are in the smart club and they aren't in the know... at all.

Commissioner Bergosh,

Your cartoons are alway very clever. You have legitimate talent.

And I completely agree with you about Ms Savage and Mr Marlette: That duo lost all credibility with me several years ago. That doesn’t change simply because I partially agree with them this time.

I’m ashamed FOR them. They have driven our local News Journal down to its all time nadir

The pitiful state of the Press is likely the greatest danger we face as a country. Savage and Marlette have significantly contributed to our dismal state of affairs.

Regarding the Gilley dismissal: I don’t think that the proceedings could have gone much worse.

The lady is a class act and has served this area for years. She has an impeccable reputation.

Further, from my perspective, Gilley bailed Escambia out at a time when Escambia government was in crisis.

The proceedings, which were orchestrated by the BCC, were UNSEEMLY to say the least.

And the reason (or reasons) for Gilley’s dismissal wasn’t sufficiently explained. I would have appreciated a fair opportunity to hear her side of the story.

In summary: extremely unseemly, yet simultaneously, absolutely ineffective in explaining Madam Administrator’s alleged deficiencies.

By voting 4:1 in-favor of Ms. Gilley’s dismissal, I’m not at all confident that you commissioners made the right decision.

Now, logically, you five brainiacs are on the hot seat.

You broke it, so you own it. If problems continue, it will be a poor reflection on your leadership/management.

I want the best for this county, so I genuinely wish you the best of luck.

But personally, I don’t approve of your performance lately.

For example: Why does it seem that you are in a race to sell all of Pensacola Beach to Julian MacQueen and Innisfree Hotels?

And if you do sell Pensacola Beach to Innisfree, why are you giving him a “bottom basement” price?

1. Earlier this year, you sold MacQueen a previously unleased Casino Beach property located immediately west of the Hampton Inn for $8,500. Then, you re-zoned it to allow for the construction of a new condominium.

2. Last April, you granted Innisfree 67% increased density on their enormous rebuild of their Best Western at 16 Via de Luna. That new hotel will be more than twice as tall as the old building.

3. You are practically eliminating his $326,000 impact fee which Innisfree owed Escambia for granting the increase in density. Your largess seemingly has no bounds - You continue to be extremely generous in your forfeiture of the taxpayers’ money.

Additionally, as you already realize, I am not at all pleased that you, May, and Barry recently, improperly moved a $3.3 million dollar FEMA grant AWAY from Pensacola Beach dune restoration funds where it was intended. Your shortsighted gain will likely cost Escambia in the long-term, in the event that your irresponsible behavior jeopardizes our county’s future FEMA requests.

Finally, you have recently made a habit of picking squabbles against our wonderful Madam Clerk in a misguided attempt to demonstrate to everyone that you are the alpha.

Your behavior has been the opposite of “Cool”.

Get it together, Mr. Commissioner!

Tom Jardine, the lady is lucky that the BOCC weathered her storm as long as they did, and that they had the grace to terminate her without cause. If she had been a man executing some of the questionable dealings that she did, she probably would have been ousted far before this. Gentlemen down here get wrapped around the axle when it comes to properly overseeing women in executive functions. A plight that the women who report to them recognize full well. If you were looking through the female perspective of a lot of women I know, you would have been on to her program a long time ago. She should have been terminated when some of her dealings during the Sally debris removal came to light. While it's commendable, I guess, that the Board gave her as long as they did to find the straight and narrow path, it went on far too long and her tenure has left a destructive wake a mile wide at the County.

Thank you--I appreciate that you weren't trying to get going that I traffic bad information, or act as a conduit, or have been paid for my advocacy etc.

I. Absolutely. Hate. that the only thing that I have ever found to work in this County is screaming from the mountaintops.

Don't know how to say this without drawing more mocking and wrath, but I was a teacher. A really good teacher. Who absolutely adored teaching, and never more when I was working for Extension School at Harvard for non traditional students from every corner of the universe.

I'm not a dummy--I started out with my advocacy knowing that in most situations you catch more bees with honey.

It got me absolutely nowhere...and other long time advocates here will attest the same.

And screaming from the mountaintops hardly gets anywhere, either. Advocacy in this County is an exercise of pounding your head against a brick wall every day a hundred times a day, and once in a blue moon your bloody head might just break through.

It shouldn't be like that. But it is.

And also there's this: it is incredibly dangerous in this town to go against the powers that be. I'm not talking about elected officials. I'm talking about the mega millionaire power brokers that sit behind the scenes and try to blow up elected officials for their development dollars. Those guys are dangerous and merciless. There isn't anything they won't do to achieve their outcomes, fueled by greed.

So what do you do, as somebody who started out on a dead limb, with no contacts, no backing, no name recognition, just nothing but a dead set will to fight against Underhill and his power backers, without a person behind me at that time to set out to expose him.

Answer: you get really loud. Really, really loud.

Another answer: you start speaking truths of the kind that Doug pretends he speaks, while he is being protected by these people. Little by little.

Every time I drew a line in the sand that I was too scared to cross--I can't go there, this person is too big--I ended up having to go there.

And here's the thing--this has never been about politics. What cracks me up is all the comments where people be like, "This woman is running for office and she just keeps running her mouth!"

Ya think?

Because if I could rub a genie out of a bottle and choose between the State's Attorney's Office dropping their charade of charges against the EMS, and running for County Commissioner, oh, you bet, I'd pick that former in a heart beat.

Until then, I will continue to run my mouth, scream, bang on pots, kick doors, punch at the podium, and throw my head against a wall.

Whatever it takes.

Recap D5 Town Hall
1)Eric Gilmore is great, announced raises for paramedic and we are going to a state contract for training and medical review with it seems to be a panel of 3 other doctors.

2)Kevin from ECUA D5 took some heat, shared a lot of info --a few of the citizens were rude. furious and hysterical unable to see his point of view.

3)Saltzman came on there and went on about the money she brought back and bubbly about the bills she had passed and appropriations very positive.
They had fund for Century who also takes care of the waste for the state prison in incorporated D5

Her and Kevin are both open to input and communication.

4)a lot of talk about various people's flooding issues/ also Barry explained the internet going in in places that had no coverage..emotional there, yet understandable.

5) The one at the end was belligerent and still interrogatory. It's actually a bit frighting to observe.

Wendy is still piling and egging it on on ECW.

Nobody ran around taking pictures of people's phone.

A lot of people aired their grievances but few understand the work that goes into solutions, even though leaders took the time to explain it.

Most people just want a solution to their own problem and as a whole are very disrespectful to the elected leaders.

I may have missed a bit but watched it and that's an anonymous recap.

Anonymous 12:57,

“no matter how many times you explain things some will never get it” is a great observation. Some of the ignorance is purposeful. A man in the audience at the town hall meeting was explained what he wanted from ecua is illegal. Instead of trying to understand what he was told he didn’t listen and kept yelling and demanding they do it his way. That close minded mentality is unproductive.

Anonymous said...

Why do some people keep demanding to know why the administrator was fired? Reasons for someone’s firing should be kept private. Commisioner Barry had a meeting with her the day before to explain to her why. Tactfully and politely declining to give the ones demanding an answer was the appropriate thing for Commisioner Barry to do. If you work for the county you know the long list of reasons why she was fired. Not Commisioner Underhill’s version he wants people to think so he can make the board look incompetent and spiteful because of his hatred and spite for them for not paying more of his legal fees. He caused the suits for himself. The county can’t afford to keep paying his legal fees because he can’t keep his mouth shut on Facebook.
