Excellent Discussions on the Economic Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Yesterday morning we had our 43rd Coffee with the Commissioner event live on Facebook.

Our guests were County Administrator Janice Gilley, Restaurateur Collier Merrill, and Economist Dr. Rick Harper.

Administrator Gilley gave a brief update on county-wide areas of interest, to include the tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico.

The balance of the discussion was centered on our region's economic outlook in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Dr. Harper gave some really insightful facts and data, along with his outlook on the future as we move through this recovery phase.  He discussed the current recession we are in, how long he believes it will last, what he believes the current unemployment rate really is (20%) and whether or not he believes we are in danger of entering a "Depression" if the COVID-19 cases spike leading to another shutdown.  Very interesting information..

Collier Merrill gave some input about his experience as a current restaurant owner and operator dealing with the shutdown--and also his thoughts on how the shutdown has affected business owners throughout the region.
