Work on Perdido Key Public Beach Access Gravel Lots Completed Yesterday

In advance of next month's commencement of Spring Break on our area beaches--staff from the County's  Parks Division and the Roads Department completed some much needed clean up, leveling and re-grading/smoothing out of 3 of the County's public beach access gravel parking lots yesterday.  See the photos, below.

I'm happy to see this! They've needed leveling for awhile now.

Will the actual bathrooms be opened at some point? Seems silly to have the structures there but not have access to them. I thought the portable toilets were supposed to be stop-gap but not permanent.

Amanda--We have had constant, nonstop vandalism at these Perdido Key access point restrooms. It really is sad to have them cleaned and stocked and ready to go and a couple of days later the sink is ripped off the wall, toilets broken with entire rolls of toilet paper stuffed down the toilet, etc. So they are closed until further notice and will more than likely be converted to changing rooms/shower facilities with the porta potties remaining for use by the visitors. Sad that a few can ruin it for all--but the porta potties are not being vandalized like the stand alone facilities were.

Thanks for the reply. Well that stinks. I understand the notion of not wanting to have to throw good money after bad for continual unnecessary repairs. Do we know why this type of vadalism is a problem here, and not at the much fancier OB or GS public beach access points? Maybe we could set up some CCTV that's linked directly to the PKFD, which is right down the road. If it's motion-detected it should be easy to track activity remotely in the middle of the night. It stands to reason that people visiting the Beach Access sights at 2am might be up to no good.

I will say that there isn't a lot of police presence on this side of town- particularly on the key, and it's needed during the busy season. At lease one D1 initiative could be funded by proceeds from parking tickets (I know that's not how the allocation bucket works, but still...) I understand that parking is so very limited, but that's no excuse to park on the dunes. That's neither here nor there on the bathroom situation, but maybe having some police presence would help both causes. Thanks again for the reply.

If certain generations have nothing better to do than vandalize public bathrooms, perhaps reinstating the draft would be a solution to tap all that energy. With our military becoming critically short in personnel due to low enlistments, doing this might help solve two problems at once. Furthermore, recent events in the world, regarding our adversaries, adds further the justification for re instating the draft. Just Sayin.
